Aubrey Mayer, Jeremy Deller, 2010

This is a small exhibit of 8 portraits by a photographer who describes himself as a ‘former professional yatchsman.’ (We will give him some slack on that – he’s only 25.) The pictures, all of artists, are all engaging and honest with just a light sheen of bohemian chic. Several of the portraits prominently feature hair, as opposed to those terribly obvious things, eyes. But then Wolfgang Tillmans barely manages to get into the frame at all.

Whether any of these images will become iconic remains to be seen. The fate of a portratist is often in the hands of his subjects as much as his own, but Mayer seems to be at one with his times.
