Tired of New York City being punched with snowstorm after snowstorm? Do vivid images of vast colorful places keep appearing in your mind at work and do reeking cramped subway cars start to appear in your dreams? Armed with a Nikon camera, Rodolfo J.Caballero traveled for 3 years capturing the people and landscapes of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila. His show “Between Heaven and Earth” highlights this work.

Upon entering LaGuardia Gallery of Photography Arts West, your eyes are struck by bright reds, blues, yellows and greens swirls of shops, ionic religious figures, wrestlers, carnivals, and everyday life among these people.

While Caballero shows the colorful everyday lives of the people that inhabit this part of Mexico, he also documents danger and homelessness. In one image he shows a group of young boys sitting together on a flight of stairs–– the saturation of bright colors and the way the boys are huddled in a close circle conveying their anguish. The grubby handrail set at an angle points your attention to the group of kids. In another: fragments of a deteriorating old building in a landscape, black birds flying through the cloudy blue sky, intimate dangers that might be up ahead, or the bleakness of the outer parts of Mexico. Some images depict the traditional Mexican holiday, Dia de Muertos, with a black backdrop, a hint of a gritty white wall and hanging paper skeletons giving an eerie feeling.
