Nebojsa Seric-Shoba

As the press release for Nebojsa Seric-Shoba's Battlefields indicates, the "history of the human race... can be seen as a history of conflicts," the majority of which "are destined to be forgotten, buried beneath the surface of history." Improbably, the photographer has taken this as a mandate to produce equally forgettable photographic documents, thus proving his thesis. That these battlefields are now idyllic and pastoral or commercialized tourist attractions is not remarkable or ironic in any way. Curator Altman's attempt to append the actual Battle of Brooklyn and the park outside the gallery to the significance of these images, while adding to the portent of the textual description of the show, does nothing to improve this offering.
