I Love This City

The focus of the current show at Sputnik is on the large number of silk-screened and painted prints evoking various cities of the world, centered on St. Petersberg, and based on a series of photographic prints called - The Space of Esher. The silk-screens seem slapdash and ill-conceived, but fortunately off in the corner are the silver gelatin prints themselves, and these are wonderful.

Chezin is not an old man (born in 1960), but his prints have the air of a 20th Century basement-darkroom genius. In this series iconic, but carefully chosen, scenes from cities around the world are taken, and then in the darkroom turned into carefully interwoven symmetrical abstractions. Bold lively shapes when seen from a distance, they become intricate street scenes when you approach more closely. A sense of fun and escape are palpable in each print.
