Adrian Piper, "Food for the Spirit #3" 1971

The 15 year retrospective at the Thomas Erben Gallery is a rather chaotic, wide ranging mix of artwork, made all the more intense by the sound of three sound-full video pieces running at once. There are several interesting photographs in the mix, including some of Lorraine O’Grady’s studies of ancient Egyptian statues and paired portraits of contemporary Americans.

But amidst the cacophony there is one corner of the gallery that emits an intense peace and quietude. It holds six self-portraits by Adrian Piper. Taken from the series “Food for the Spirit”, and going from dark to almost completely black, they document a summer spent alone in 1971, fasting, and studying yoga.
