A Severe Female Gaze
Carrie Levy
You Before All
Reviewer #1
Carrie Levy, “Jess”

Different people approach gallery exhibitions in different ways. Some walk in and just start looking at the pictures, others know that they should go to the desk and read the artist’s statement and the press release so that they will have some idea about what the pictures are about. I am of the first school.

Walking into “You Before All”, I was confronted with a series of modestly sized black and white images of naked or half-naked men. All of them seemed to be in a state of distress– as if coming from the back ward of some forgotten mental asylum and suffering from a psychological or neurological malady.

Well, back at the artist statement, I found out that I was maybe 90% wrong. The artist, Carrie Levy, writes that she was indeed influenced by medical photography, but the victims (Levy’s term) are all models she recruits, and then, rather ambiguously, has “experience...potential harm or pleasure.”

 by unidentified photographer.

The pictures have impact, and some of them trigger memories (for example, W. Eugene Smith’s photo “Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath”.) Most of the pictures though would seem to have appeal only to those with a particular interest in classy pictures of men being dominated by women.

“These male subjects are under the microscope of a severe female gaze, “ Levy declares, and then rather graciously concludes, “…in the same way I judge the men in these photographs, I invite the audience to judge me. “

With a command like that, I must obey.
