The Works

The Works is a group exhibition of 14 Janet Borden gallery artists that includes Tina Barney, E.J. Bellocq, Fred Cray, Robert Cummings, Lee Friedlander, Michael Collins, Martin Parr, Neil Winokur, Jim Dow, and Jan Groover. It’s clearly a very diverse group of photographers who offer some surprising—and sometimes amusing contrasts. For example, the pairing of Tina Barney’s large (48x60 inch), complex family portraits with E.J. Bellocq’s finely detailed Storyville images of New Orleans’ prostitutes, circa 1907. Or compare the three Lee Friedlander photographs from his much acclaimed America by Car series with the view offered by a Michael Collins cityscape or John Pfahl’s western landscapes.

On a more conceptual level, Fred Cray’s self-portraits stand alone. He cuts and pastes his self-portraits and then photographs them—they’re fun to look at and be around. Robert Cummings, another conceptual artist, is also here. He’s a painter, printmaker, sculptor and photographer who takes pictures of his conceptual drawings and constructions that have layers of meanings and which reference science and history. The title “The Ball was Left by the Foot of the Folding Screen/The Ball was Left by the Foot of the Stairs” is a hint.

For something completely different, head for the Martin Parr in the group. His work is usually refreshing and “Think of England” will not disappoint. Nor will Neil Winokur’s “Toilet.” Marcel Duchamp would have approved.

Small in size but broad in scope, “The Works” offers something for almost every artistic taste. It’s a quick, painless introduction to the work of some well-known artists.
