Erwitt, Unique New York III

Misha Erwitt grew up around photography and photographers - “Some of the best in the world” as he put it in the notes to the exhibit. The result is an eye attuned to the odd juxtapositions that surround us daily but which few notice.

The thirty-four images on display span over four decades of work. While a few prints from the last decade are in color and born digital, the rest are in classic black and white – from the photo of a young woman at a 1968 victory party for Richard Nixon (who on closer inspection appears to have vampire fangs) to a 2004 image of a trendy downtown party in Soho with a derelict on a window ledge.

Many of the photos capture the humor of chance incongruities on the city streets: a man in a suit walks along 5th Avenue carrying a surfboard; a self-absorbed woman appears to be chased by a statue, two elderly ladies share a park bench with two drag queens at Wigstock. Some of the images are a bit more subtle in their incongruity – a fighter jet cuts diagonally across the frame in one image but a closer look shows it to be static with a pigeon resting on its nose, though others, such as the color image entitled “Financial Crisis” are more direct.

Street Smart” offers a nice break from overly conceptual and manufactured imagery, reminding us that the fun is still out there if your eyes are open to it. The show is nicely paralleled by “Unposed,” an exhibit of Craig Semetko’s work in the other half of the Leica Gallery
